Who doesn’t want to get behind a great cause, right? For those who have never heard of Movember, it is a pretty sweet campaign for raising awareness and funds to support prostate cancer. Here is an excerpt about Movember from the official US Movember website:

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health….

In 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia – representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising $42 Million US equivalent dollars for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.

I’ve got to admit that I haven’t been fully participating this year, but here is my little contribution to the cause.

For the last 4-5 years, I’ve followed the efforts of the Invisible Children movement. In 2003, three young men went to Africa in search of an adventure and stumbled upon an untold war in northern Uganda that had been going on for almost 20 years. Aside from being Africa’s longest running war, the saddest part of the war is that the soldiers are children. Abducted and forced to fight, these children are made into killing machines.

Invisible Children has made it their mission to see this war come to an end and the child soldiers set free and rehabilitated. They have invested into the infrastructure of the country through schools as well as micro-economic opportunities.

The current effort of Invisible Children is The Rescue. Here is a synopsis of the event:

On April 25, the international community will unite to deliver the innocent from Kony’s reign and ensure he is brought to justice. Thousands of participants will gather in 100 cities across the world to abduct themselves and raise the banner of the child soldiers taken by Joseph Kony.

Those abducted will leave their homes and walk to an event location while carrying their supplies on their backs. At the site, they will then wait to be “rescued” – this requires a certain amount of media coverage as well as the attendance of pre-determined cultural and political leaders. Depending on the size, scope and fervor of the specific event locale, those leaders invited to The Rescue may be a Congressional Representative, State Official, local mayor or local business/media figure.

At the event, participants will write letters, create art/photo projects and seek out media attention in an effort to petition the US, European, Canadian, Mexican and Australian government to develop a strategy and support existing efforts to rescue Kony’s child soldiers.

Go to therescue.invisiblechildren.com for a video about the conflict in Uganda, as well as more info about The Rescue.
